National Chemistry Week

National Chemistry WeekNational Chemistry Week is an annual celebration of chemistry in the United States. Over the course of the month, there are events and other activities that focus on chemistry as a science and profession. On the first day of National Chemistry Week, there is a Teacher's Symposium. Teachers are invited to speak about topics relating to their chemistry education and their work as teachers of science and students of chemistry. This is a chance for teachers to share stories about teaching chemistry, including classroom challenges. On the second day of National Chemistry Week, there is a National Chemistry Book Fair. This event helps all those who love books to come together to show off their chemistry collections. There will be vendors who will display books, posters, and others who will sell supplies such as ribbon and cards. There will also be book and magazine signings and workshops where participants can learn more about how to make wonderful materials by working with them in the laboratory. The third day of National Chemistry Week focuses on Events at the Union Theological Seminary. Visitors are welcome to take tours of the chemistry laboratories or participate in hands-on activities during their visit. A guided tour of the medical school includes a tour of the test chambers. The tours will involve applying electrodes to different surfaces of the chambers, and helping to test different chemical reactions. The fourth day of National Chemistry Week includes special programs and activities at four classic chemistry museums. The museum at the University of Rochester holds a botanical garden, a chemistry lab, and classroom. The Museum of Modern Art hosts a learning tour and exhibits the works of artists, most recently, Zach Weinersmith. The Getty Museum in Los Angeles holds a science exhibit about organic chemistry, and the West Virginia University in Morgantown hosts a tour of its chemistry laboratory. On the fifth day of National Chemistry Week, Indianapolis hosts the Indiana Society of Chemistry. This event, which takes place the day before National Chemistry Week starts, is designed to provide visitors with an introduction to the subject of chemistry and how it applies to everyday life.Throughout the week, there are science outreach events that provide a good opportunity for visitors to get acquainted with the subject of chemistry. One of these events is the National Science and Technology Week. This event highlights the way science can help society by taking into account the consequences of human actions, which is a major part of chemistry.National Chemistry Week runs from February 15 through March 5. For more information on how you can get involved in this important event, contact your local chapter of the American Chemical Society.
